Help us bring hymns to life

Lend your device a little time. Help someone, somewhere, learn to sing a hymn.

Advent Hymnals is a free website and app with Seventh-day Adventist and other old hymnals. Every hymn comes with words, music and four-part singing: soprano, alto, tenor and bass. Our AI voices help people hear and learn their singing part.

Creating these recordings takes a lot of computer time. You can help by sharing the spare time on your phone or computer. While your device is not busy, it can help us prepare more hymns for everyone to enjoy.

Join the volunteers

How it works

  1. Sign up. Fill in a short form with your name and email. You can also add your country and church if you wish.
  2. Get your join code. As soon as you submit the form, you receive your own join code, QR code and a download for your device.
  3. Let your device help. Install the small app. It downloads the voice it needs, then sings a few short phrases of a hymn at a time and sends them back to us.
  4. Help complete more hymns. Every phrase is checked before it is used. Once all the phrases are ready, the finished hymn appears on Advent Hymnals for everyone to enjoy.

The devices you can lend

We use your name and email only to give you a join code and contact you about volunteering. See our Privacy Policy.

It won't get in your way

We want volunteering to be easy and comfortable. The app is designed to use your device's spare time, not get in the way of your normal activities.

On the main screen, you will find two simple switches:

  • Only while charging: your device works only when it is plugged in.
  • Only when idle: your device works only when you are not using it.

Both switches are off by default. You decide whether to turn them on.

The app also has built-in protections:

  • On phones running on battery, it stops when the battery drops below 50%.
  • On laptops, it stops when the battery drops below 40%.
  • It uses at most half of your processor, at the lowest priority.
  • On phones, it stops if the device gets warm.

You can pause or remove the app at any time. Your device remains yours. You are always in control.

Your data and privacy

We respect your privacy. You do not need an account to use the volunteering app. To manage volunteering and prevent abuse, we keep the following information about each device:

  • A device ID.
  • The name the device gives (its computer name or phone model).
  • Your device platform, processor model and number of cores.
  • The app version.
  • The total amount of work completed.
  • The join code used by the device.
  • The device's last IP address (kept for 30 days only).

Your name and email address from the sign-up form are used only to contact you about volunteering. More in our Privacy Policy.

A note about the voices: the singing voices are provided by the LUNAI Project under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 licence (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). All recordings remain free and are credited.

Frequently asked questions

Will the app slow down my phone or computer?

The app works at the lowest priority and uses at most half of your processor. It also has protections to stop when your phone gets warm or your device battery gets low. You can choose to let it work only while charging or when your device is idle.

How much internet data does it use?

The app needs to download the singing voice once. This is about 260 MB. On phones, the download uses Wi-Fi by default.

Soon, if another volunteer device on the same Wi-Fi already has the voice, your device will be able to get it from there instead, so a family or church downloads the voice just once over the internet. This waits for the voice's makers to agree.

After the initial download, sending and receiving hymn phrases uses very little data.

Is it safe?

The app is designed to work quietly in the background without taking over your device. It has limits on processor use, battery levels and phone temperature. You can pause it or remove it whenever you wish.

How do I stop volunteering?

You can pause the app whenever you want. If you no longer wish to take part, simply remove it from your device. There is no obligation to keep it running.

Can I choose which hymns my device sings?

Not yet. The app receives short hymn phrases to process and sends the completed work back for checking. Hymns are made available on the website after their phrases have been checked.
